For some time, the regions of Concepción, Pucón, Puerto Natales, Puerto Varas, Punta Arenas and Torres del Paine, among others, have regulations governing the amount of plastic bags that business premises given to the inhabitants or laying down its gradual elimination to replace them with bags of other less harmful materials.
It seeks to reduce the 3,400 million plastic bags are used each year and no more than 15 minutes, according to the Ministry of the environment, then end up polluting water or littering the streets for a period of degradation that goes from 100 to 150 years.
To avoid that this continue occurring, the mayors of 12 municipalities of the región de Los Ríos, Futrono, Lanco, Lago Ranco, La Unión, Los Lagos, Máfil, Mariquina, Paillaco, Panguipulli, Río Bueno and Valdivia, signed a collaboration protocol to reduce the use of plastic carriers.
The initiative has the support of the Ministry of environment (MMA), the national service of tourism (Sernatur) and WWF Chile NGO, is intended to protect the environment, which is considered one of the main tourist attractions of the region.
The Minister of environment, Pablo Badenier, mentioned that: “Is aligned with our law of promoting recycling that we are promoting as Ministry in addition, this initiative aims to among other things, reduce the amounts of plastics, among other waste that reach landfills and landfills”.
