THE DINAR HAS A LONG TRADITION IN THE ARAB WORLD
The dinar is a widespread currency unit in the Arab world with a long tradition that goes back to the 7th century. In the course of the Islamic expansion in the early and high Middle Ages, the coin became the most important gold currency in the world and was a stable means of payment for almost 800 years. Today, many countries call their currency the dinar, for example the Serbian dinar, but the currency is also called the dinar in Algeria, Tunisia and Iran.
THE DIVISION INTO HUNDREDTHS IS STILL NEW
The subdivision of the Jordanian dinar into 100 piastres is comparatively new; the division into hundredths was only established in 1992. Previously, there was a denomination of 10 dirhams and 1,000 fils, which resulted in a large number of coins of various denominations. Today there are coins to the value of 1, 5 and 10 piastres as well as ¼ dinars and ½ dinars. The latter is a bimetal coin. Banknotes exist in the values 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 dinars.
