Pentagon (USA) – description, history, location. Exact address, phone number, website. Reviews of tourists, photos and videos.

The Pentagon – one of the most important buildings in America, which is a symbol of the highest power of the country, was built in the first half of the 20th century. It houses the US Department of Defense, also known as the Pentagon.

The name itself means translated from Greek as “pentagon”, it was in the form of this figure that the building was built. When designing the Pentagon, military architects wanted to create not a skyscraper that is an easy target for terrorists, but, on the contrary, a mundane building – with five floors above the ground and two more below it.

Today, the Pentagon is the largest office building in the world. It is located near Washington DC. The Pentagon was built in January 1943, it took only about a year and a half to build it. Simple, monolithic, made in the neoclassical style, this building was of fundamental importance during the Second World War. See citypopulationreview for state facts, symbols and history of Montana.

The Pentagon was built from simple but reliable materials – sand, reinforced concrete and more than forty thousand concrete piles, Indiana limestone was used as a facing material, but Italian marble was abandoned for political reasons – Italy in those years was an ally of Nazi Germany.

Previously, lovers of military affairs and military style could easily get to the Pentagon for a tour. However, after the terrorist act of 9/11, only strictly planned excursions in a very limited number began to be allowed.

Excursions to the Pentagon are by appointment only, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. They are, to our surprise, completely free. The only thing you need to get to the “secret” object is your passport.

Tours of the building are led by smart cadets. The walls are covered with photographs. Favorite topic – an American soldier helps civilians in one of the eastern countries. The tour of the Pentagon usually ends with a visit to the memorial in memory of those killed during the September 11, 2001 attacks. It is located on the very spot where the Boeing 757 crashed into the building. The memorial is modest: a black marble slab with the names of the dead silently recalls the tragedy that claimed the lives of both Pentagon employees and the passengers of Flight 77.

Figures and facts

Each side of the pentagonal Pentanog is 281 meters, the perimeter of the building is about 1405 meters. If you add up the length of all the corridors of the Pentagon, you get about 28 kilometers, and the area of all floors of the building will be 604 thousand square meters. The height of the Pentagon (excluding the lower floors) is about 23 meters.

The building has 7754 windows, 131 stairs, 13 elevators, 19 escalators, and it will take you only about 7 minutes to get from one corner of the building to the opposite – if you take the shortest path along one of the many corridors.

The building employs 26 thousand people, and it also has many restaurants and cafeterias, including well-known world chains – Starbucks, KFC, McDonald’s, Subway and many others. etc., where daily employees of the Pentagon drink about 800 liters of milk, 7,000 bottles of soft drinks and 5,000 cups of coffee. Also in the Pentagon there are shops, confectioneries, a fitness center, there are lounges – all this so that military office workers can brighten up the loneliness of their wives while they themselves disappear at work. Every day, the Pentagon receives 200,000 calls and 1,200,000 messages.

Directly from the Capitol through the underground service gallery you will find yourself in the largest national library in the United States.

This library has quite a rich history. The library was opened in 1800 on the grounds of the Capitol, and at first only the president, vice president, senators and members of the US Congress had access to it. In 1851, during a fire set by the British, most of the book collection of the third president, Thomas Jefferson, burned down. Later, the library was built opposite the Capitol and began to refill it.

In 1870, a decree was issued that one copy of every book published in the United States must be in the Library of Congress. Every year the collection increased through the efforts of the presidents and leaders of the library fund. Today, the Library of Congress holds over 140 million so-called items: books, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, manuscripts, publications, audio and video materials, photographs, and maps. Every year, the collection receives about a couple of million of these materials.

The Library of Congress has its own website, where you can find a complete list of publications stored in it. Also in the building itself there are consolidated catalogs containing an account of all books and other materials. You will have the opportunity to find a volume of your favorite author in the lists and sit comfortably with him in one of the 18 reading rooms of the library.
